<p>Streuth. Hot on the heels of <a href="http://dharmafly.com/we-won-a-bric">last week&#8217;s UnLtdWorld award</a>, I was amazed to experience <a href="http://dharmafly.com/openfreecycle">the web application</a> that I created with <a href="http://leitchy.com">Tom Leitch</a> being awarded the top two prizes Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://openhacklondon.pbworks.com">OpenHackLondon</a>. And this, after <a href="http://dharmafly.com/hackhud">winning a prize</a> with &#8216;<a href="http://dharmafly.com/projects/hackhud">HackHUD</a>&#8216; at the previous Hack Day London, two years earlier (the famous one, when it <a href="http://www.vimeo.com/214490">rained inside Alexandra Palace</a>).</p>
<p>OpenHackLondon is an opportunity for web developers and programmers to get together, to collaborate and experiment with new ideas in technology. The focus is a 24-hour (overnight) hacking challenge, with a two-minute demo by each team, and prizes in several categories.</p>
<h3>OpenFreecycle</h3>
<p>Our entry was <a href="http://dharmafly.com/openfreecycle">OpenFreecycle</a> &#8211; an itch that I&#8217;d been wanting to scratch for a couple of years. This was an attempt to make community sharing of free, unwanted items much more easy and accessible. Sort of like eBay, but for free. <span id="more-945"></span></p>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 510px"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/phploveme/3519083214/" title="Yahoo Open Hack London 432 (by Jinho.Jung)"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3315/3519083214_59c13dff6e.jpg" title="Yahoo Open Hack London 432 (by Jinho.Jung)" alt="Yahoo Open Hack London 432 (by Jinho.Jung)" width="500" height="333" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Our two-minute presentation to the crowd</p></div>
<p>There are around <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=freecycle">10,000 local &#8220;Freecycle&#8221; mailing lists</a> (all of them are hosted on <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com">Yahoo Groups</a>). They offer an extremely useful service: a way for people to offer or find unwanted items amongst their local community. Got a spare mattress? Put it on Freecycle. Need a chest of drawers? Find one on Freecycle.</p>
<h3>The Problem: Closed</h3>
<p>The system, however, is far from ideal. Each group is initially private and closed. You need to request membership and await approval for each group before you can see what&#8217;s available. Prospective browsing in neighbouring groups becomes a painful task.</p>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 510px"><a title="10,000 Freecycle Groups" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dharmasphere/3532598667/"><img title="10,000 Freecycle Groups" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2284/3532598667_b8826732d9.jpg" alt="10,000 Freecycle Groups" width="500" height="309" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Over 10,000 Freecycle mailing lists on Yahoo Groups</p></div>
<p>And then there are the emails &#8211; hundreds in your inbox every day. And, because each group is just a plain and simple, private email list, there is no way to expose all that interesting content to other places on the web. That is, until now&#8230;</p>
<h3>The Solution: Open</h3>
<p>A simple, searchable, open system, with the option to subscribe to feeds for specific search terms in specific area (e.g. <a href="http://dharmafly.com/openfreecycle/feed/baby">&#8216;baby&#8217; in Leeds</a>), the possibility to subscribe to alert notifications for specific items and the ability to integrate all this content around the web, for example with <a href="http://diveintogreasemonkey.org/install/what-is-greasemonkey.html">Greasemonkey</a> in shopping sites, to inform you when an item is available for free in your local area:</p>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 510px"><a title="OpenFreecycle on eBay, with Greasemonkey" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dharmasphere/3531532837/"><img title="OpenFreecycle on eBay, with Greasemonkey" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2122/3531532837_5eb984b759.jpg" alt="OpenFreecycle on eBay, with Greasemonkey" width="500" height="309" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A mockup for OpenFreecycle integration into eBay, via Greasemonkey</p></div>
<p>What we built was a rough proof-of-concept. It only handles the Leeds group &#8211; and very simplistically, at that &#8211; but it gives an idea of what is possible when you start to open up data.</p>
<p><em>(Of course, there are merits in selected aspects of the system being closed, or guarded &#8211; e.g. in protecting user&#8217;s contact details, and the ability to identify potential exploiters, such as tradesmen scooping up everyone&#8217;s free offerings. These need to be preserved, for the health of the community.)</em></p>
<h3>How we did it</h3>
<p><a title="OpenFreecycle" href="http://www.slideshare.net/premasagar/openfreecycle">Here are the slides</a> from our demo:<br />
<object width="500" height="418" data="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?sessid=null&amp;pvt=0&amp;doc=slides-090510095852-phpapp01&amp;version_no=1242080051&amp;presentationId=1413363&amp;totalSlides=23&amp;startSlide=1&amp;inContest=0&amp;preview=no&amp;stitle=openfreecycle&amp;userName=premasagar&amp;has_form=null&amp;form_after_slide_number=null&amp;form_is_blocking=false&amp;hostedIn=slideshare&amp;useHttp=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?sessid=null&amp;pvt=0&amp;doc=slides-090510095852-phpapp01&amp;version_no=1242080051&amp;presentationId=1413363&amp;totalSlides=23&amp;startSlide=1&amp;inContest=0&amp;preview=no&amp;stitle=openfreecycle&amp;userName=premasagar&amp;has_form=null&amp;form_after_slide_number=null&amp;form_is_blocking=false&amp;hostedIn=slideshare&amp;useHttp=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></p>
<p>We used the <a href="http://developer.yahoo.com/mail/">Yahoo Mail API</a> (via PHP) to log into a subscribing mailbox, then converted the emails to Atom feeds (with Perl), imported these into <a href="http://pipes.yahoo.com">Yahoo Pipes</a> and performed geo-location, term-extraction and some other bits and bobs, drilled down into the resultant feeds with <a href="http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/">YQL</a> and then presented the lot using the <a href="http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/staticmaps/">Google Static Maps API</a> and a smattering of <a href="http://jquery.com">jQuery</a>. Voilà!</p>
<h3>We Won the Double!</h3>

<p>This month, we’re taking great pleasure in helping out both the <a title="Our previous blog post, about the Twestival phenomenon" href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/twestival">London and Brighton Twestivals</a> on the 12th of February. We&#8217;re donating a <em>mind-expanding</em>, floaty prize to the <a title="Twestival raffle" href="http://london.twestival.com/raffle">London Twestival raffle</a>, and we&#8217;re a main sponsor for the <a title="Brighton Twestival" href="http://brighton.twestival.com/">Brighton Twestival</a>.<br />
<span id="more-796"></span></p>
<h3>Why the sponsorship?</h3>
<p>As ever, we’re interested in helping out with events that are run <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/whats-green-and-goes-to-barcamp">for the community and by the community</a>. This time, we&#8217;re extra-enthused because the Twestivals also embody several other passions of ours:</p>
<ol>
<li>We love gatherings where positive, chance meetings happen between like-minded people.</li>
<li>We want to support events in aid of charities (all proceeds help <a href="http://www.charitywater.org/twestival/">Charity:water</a>&#8216;s efforts to bring safe drinking water to the world).</li>
<li>We&#8217;re excited about events that have been enabled by social media (in this case, the ever-growing community on <a href="http://twitter.com/dharmafly">Twitter</a>), where online communities create events in their very own neighbourhood.</li>
</ol>
<h3>What&#8217;s this about Twitterers floating?</h3>
<p>At the London Twestival, one lucky raffle winner will win our prize of <strong>a year&#8217;s supply of float tank sessions</strong>.</p>
<p>Sometimes you need a rest from all the hubbub, wittering, twittering and chasing about. At London&#8217;s float centre, <a href="http://floatopia.co.uk">Floatopia</a>, you&#8217;ll find a haven from the mad rush of life in a warm, relaxing, womb-like pool:</p>
<blockquote><p>Whilst suspended in a dense Epsom salt solution, warmed to skin temperature, one soon gets the illusion of floating in air. The resulting sense of serenity and deep well-being will stay with you for days after your float.</p></blockquote>
<p><em>(<strong>Warning:</strong> You may have to leave your iPhone outside).</em></p>
<p>Six months of the prize is courtesy of <a href="http://dharmafly.com">Dharmafly</a> and this has been generously matched with another six months by <a href="http://floatopia.co.uk">Floatopia</a>. You can read more about the benefits of floating <a href="http://floatopia.co.uk/benefits.htm">on the Floatopia site</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floatation_tank">Wikipedia</a>.</p>
<p>Happy Twestivals! We’d love to hear your experiences if you’re the winner of our floaty prize, and even if you aren’t, drop us a comment below and let us know how the Twestival went for you.</p>
<h3>Update: Another prize &#8211; Green Hosting</h3>
<p>We&#8217;re also now offering a prize of <strong>one year of our <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/its-getting-windy-in-here">100% renewable energy web hosting</a></strong> for the Brighton Twestival raffle. Best of luck, raffle peeps!</p>

<div class="vevent"><a class="url summary" href="http://twestival.com" title="Twestival">Twestival</a> is a global series of local events, happening in <span class="location">over 100 cities worldwide (including <a href="http://london.twestival.com">London</a> and <a href="http://brighton.twestival.com">Brighton</a>)</span>, on <abbr class="dtstart" title="2009-02-12">12 February 2009</abbr>.</div>
<p>Twestival bridges the gap between the off- and online worlds. It provides a chance for communities on <a href="http://twitter.com" title="Twitter, microblogging social network">Twitter</a> (a web service that allows users to share their thoughts with their peers) to meet in person and to raise money for <a href="http://www.charitywater.org">Charity:water</a>, who provide clean water for people in developing countries.</p>
<p><a href="http://dharmafly.com" title="Dharmafly">Dharmafly</a> spoke to <a href="http://twitter.com/amanda" title="Amanda Rose on Twitter">Amanda Rose</a>, the enterprising organiser who got the Twestival ball rolling, to find out more about Twestival and why Twitter is suited to this kind of crowd-sourced social action. <span id="more-672"></span></p>
<h3>Rippling messages through the web</h3>
<p>As Amanda noted, Twitter allows for a “ripple effect”, letting messages spread and surge through the web. This gives Twestival instant access to willing participants &#8211; people who pass on the message and offer to get involved. </p>
<p>Those who are making Twestival happen are ordinary people, choosing to help a good cause after hearing about it through their Twitter network. </p>
<p><strong>Charity:water</strong> has been chosen as Twestival’s beneficiary, partly because they are active Twitter users themselves (such as the charity&#8217;s founder, <a href="http://twitter.com/scottharrison">Scott Harrison</a>), using it to spread news of their work and to connect with interested parties.</p>
<h3>Twitter steps out of the web</h3>
<p>Twitter is sometimes characterised as another way for socially-awkward people to avoid human contact (mainly by people who’ve never used it). Twestival is further evidence that Twitterers want their interactions to make a difference beyond the web. </p>
<h3>Twestival: a flash-function</h3>
<p>So what exactly is a Twestival? It’s a loose idea, varying in nature from city to city. Each Twestival is a rapid-response flash-event, created almost spontaneously by volunteers. </p>
<p>Some Twestivals are taking the form of an &#8220;<a title="'Unconference' on Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference">unconference</a>&#8221; (a grassroots conference organised by the participants), some are relaxed social gatherings in cafes and pubs, and some will have entertainment and activities. All Twestivals aim to bring together local Twitter communities to benefit a good cause. </p>
<h3>Twestival: raising money for Charity:water</h3>
<p>At the heart of every Twestival is <strong>Charity:water</strong>, a non-profit organisation that brings clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of donations go directly to creating sustainable clean water solutions. </p>
<p>The directness of Charity:water’s donation system means that every penny raised by generous Twitterers will help provide clean water to the people who need it most. You can also donate directly on the <a title="Twestival on Charity:water" href="http://www.charitywater.org/twestival/">Twestival page</a> of the Charity:water website.</p>
<h3>Twestival in Brighton: @brightwest</h3>
<p>Brighton’s Twestival tickets <a href="http://www.amiando.com/twestivalbrighton.html">go on sale</a> at 12pm today. If you want to track its progress, follow <a href="http://twitter.com/twestival" title="Twestival on Twitter">@twestival</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/brightwest" title="Brighton Twestival on Twitter">@brightwest</a> on Twitter, and check <a href="http://brighton.twestival.com" title="Brighton Twestival blog">brighton.twestival.com</a> for more information.</p>
<h3>Update: Now sponsoring</h3>
<p>Dharmafly is now happily a Twestival sponsor, and we&#8217;re giving away <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/twitterer-floats-away-at-twestival">some gorgeous raffle prizes</a>.</p>

<p>After a thorough search, we are now working with a new <strong>web hosting</strong> provider for the websites that we manage. Web hosting is where a website lives on the Web. It needs to be fast, reliable and supported by a dedicated technical team. And&#8230; it <em>needs</em> to be powered by <strong>100% renewable energy</strong>.</p>
<p>Web hosting computers are active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Keeping the World Wide Web online takes a lot of energy, and we at <a href="http://dharmafly.com">Dharmafly</a> want to be as <strong>responsible</strong> and <strong>ethical</strong> as possible with our piece of it.</p>
<p><span id="more-69"></span><br />
<h3>100% Renewable Energy Web Hosting</h3>
<p>Renewable energy web hosting is fairly common in the US, where companies such as <a href="http://aiso.net">AISO</a> use solar energy for power. However, there are fewer options available for UK-based hosting. Many of the UK-based companies that offer renewable energy web hosting are actually re-selling US-based hosting. This can be a problem for UK-based businesses who want their websites to <strong>rank well in Google</strong> and other search engines.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas_t/293413649/" title="Brightening (by Nicholas_T)"><img src="http://dharmafly.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/wind.jpg" alt="" title="Brightening (by Nicholas_T)" width="500" height="226" /></a></p>
<h3>Search Engine Optimisation for UK Websites</h3>
<p>When people in the UK search Google, they receive a set of results that favours UK-based websites. Google determines whether a website is UK-based in two ways. It will first see if the web address ends with <em>.co.uk</em>, <em>.org.uk</em> or another UK-based name. If, however, the web address ends with <em>.com</em>, <em>.org</em>, <em>.net</em> or another non-UK name, then Google will work out the country where the website&#8217;s hosting is based. Clearly, it is important that we can offer our clients UK-based hosting.</p>
<h3>In a Bunker</h3>
<p>We found a solution. Housed in what used to be a NATO military bunker, <a href="http://www.smartbunker.com">Smartbunker</a> is the UK&#8217;s first web hosting centre to use 100% renewable energy. It runs purely from <strong>wind power</strong>, supplied by a wind turbine from <a href="http://www.ecotricity.co.uk">Ecotricity</a>.</p>
<p>The energy is <em>actually</em> renewable, rather than it being a &#8220;<a title="'Carbon offsetting' on Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_offset">carbon-offsetting</a>&#8221; project, where trees are planted to offset the carbon burned by non-renewable energy, such as coal.</p>
<p>(<strong>Techie details:</strong> <em>We use high-specification, low-energy <a href="http://www.smartbunker.com/why-us/key-benefits/why-ibm-blade-centre" title="IBM HS Energy Efficient, Resilient Blade Servers">IBM Blade servers</a>, with Intel Dual-Core Xeon 5148 LV 2.33 Ghz, 2GB Server Memory, 2 x IBM 73GB 10k SAS Hard Drive RAID 1250.00 43.75 and a Plesk control panel for domain management</em>).</p>
<h3>Co-operative</h3>
<p>We work with <a href="http://ecohost.coop">Ecohost</a> to manage our web hosting computers at Smartbunker. They are a worker&#8217;s co-operative, based at Manchester&#8217;s new co-operative offices, <a href="http://openspace.coop">OpenSpace</a>. They&#8217;re friendly, über-ethical and they really know their stuff.</p>
<p>Together, we&#8217;re happy to offer ethically hosted websites for the UK and beyond. If you&#8217;d like to get your website hosted with us, please <a href="http://dharmafly.com/contact">get in touch</a>.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve submitted &#8220;<a href="http://www.sicamp.org/?page_id=91" title="Social Compost: Liberate Your Peelings!">Social Compost</a>&#8221; as a project proposal to <a href="http://www.sicamp.org" title="Social Innovation Camp - London, 4-6 April, 2008">Social Innovation Camp</a>.</p>
<p><acronym title="Social Innovation">SI</acronym> Camp is a grassroots conference, where social entrepreneurs and web developers get together to help each other out. A <a href="http://www.sicamp.org/?page_id=16" title="Submitted ideas to Social Innovation Camp">number of great ideas</a> have been submitted, a few of which will be selected for the event. <em>My</em> idea is to connect local people who produce kitchen scraps with those who produce compost.</p>
<p><span id="more-56"></span>I&#8217;ve moved home twice in the last 6 months, and both times to a top floor flat with no garden. <abbr title="My wife and I">We</abbr> get a weekly delivery of fruit and veg (from <a href="http://www.pulseorganics.com" title="Pulse Organics">Pulse</a>) and quickly turn it into a whole heap of peelings. How could we just throw that juicy waste away&#8230; to slowly fester in a plastic bag on some landfill site?</p>
<p>And so, we have scoured both of these new neighbourhoods, looking for someone with a compost bin to take our scraps (thank you Toni, Jon and Anna). There must be a better way&#8230;.</p>
<p>From the <a href="http://www.sicamp.org/?page_id=91">Social Compost</a> proposal:</p>
<blockquote><p>
‘Social Compost’ would be a drop-dead simple website, based around an interactive map. There would be an option to add yourself to the map and to offer either kitchen peelings or mature compost. You could use the map to find others who are offering either peelings or compost.
</p></blockquote>
<p>Have you ever been in a situation like mine? What did you do? And how might such a website help you?</p>

<blockquote><p>I am afraid it is no exaggeration to say that what we saw was a hellish scene. [<cite><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7103539.stm">source</a></cite>]</p></blockquote>
<p>It has been a sobering experience to see reports of the Bangladesh cyclone &#8211; and to watch them flow through the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/">Bangladesh River Journey</a> site <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/bangladeshboat">we built</a> for BBC World Service. The project&#8217;s original aim was to expose the very real presence of climate change in Bangladesh &#8211; a low-lying land of myriad rivers &#8211; and the cyclone&#8217;s arrival seemed shockingly symbolic.</p>
<p>While news of the cyclone competed for airtime in the general media, the World Service maintained a stream of often very personal and touching accounts from the Bangladeshi people. Their <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/bangladeshboat/">Flickr photos</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/bangladeshboat">Twitter texts</a> acted as informal media channels, adding an extra dimension to the more formal reporting on the World Service website and radio.</p>
<p><span id="more-39"></span><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bangladeshboat/2033398353/" title="Children under shelter (by bangladeshboat)"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2075/2033398353_1f652cb78a_m.jpg" title="Children under shelter (by bangladeshboat)" alt="Children under shelter (by bangladeshboat)" width="240" height="159" /></a> <a title=""This was my home" (by bangladeshboat)" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bangladeshboat/2048315850/"><img width="240" height="160" alt=""This was my home" (by bangladeshboat)" title=""This was my home" (by bangladeshboat)" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2069/2048315850_7c84cd1c84_m.jpg"/></a></p>
<h3>Social Media News</h3>
<p>This year, the World Service are celebrating 75 years of global media broadcasting. They, and the BBC in general, are about to launch a major website redesign and there is a conscious effort to embrace new media techniques, such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microformat">microformats</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Api">APIs</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking">social networking</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_content">open content</a>.</p>
<p>What is the future for news reporting through social media? Is there greater or less authenticity in such reporting? <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/climate-change-in-social-media#respond">Share your thoughts below</a>&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>URL:</strong> <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/">www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat</a></p>
<p>Phew! We&#8217;ve been busy these last three weeks! From commission to launch in just 12 working days (and nights), Dharmafly has built a site for the BBC that explores social media and cutting edge Web technologies&#8230;</p>
<p>The <a rel="tag" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/">Bangladesh River Journey</a> is a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(web_application_hybrid)">mashup</a> of posts from a <acronym title="British Broadcasting Corporation">BBC</acronym> World Service trip to track the effects of climate change in Bangladesh. The trip lasts a month, with photos being posted to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bangladeshboat">Flickr</a>, messages sent to <a href="http://twitter.com/bangladeshboat">Twitter</a> and journal entries made on the <a rel="tag" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/">World Service</a> site. The mashup puts all these posts on to a map, letting you navigate around and follow the trip.</p>
<p><span id="more-28"></span>The journalists are equipped with a <a rel="tag" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gps">GPS</a> navigation device. Each time they visit a new location, they post their co-ordinates to the Twitter stream (e.g. <a href="http://twitter.com/bangladeshboat/statuses/376953702">this post</a>). Our system then logs the coordinates and applies them to every photo, tweet and diary entry until the next location.</p>
<p>In addition to what you see in the browser, there are a number of gems hidden under the hood: microformats, geoRSS and an API. (Non-techie folk may happily skip this and proceed straight to <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/bangladeshboat#comments">comments</a> :)</p>
<h3 id="microformats" class="subsection">Microformats</h3>
<p><img src="http://dharmafly.com/images/microformats.png" alt="Microformats logo" /></p>
<p><a rel="tag" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microformats">Microformats</a> are new, developing standards for adding extra meaning to the <abbr title="HyperText Markup Language">HTML</abbr> of a web page. They create all sorts of possibilities for software (from search engines to browsers) to interact with the content in innovative and useful ways.</p>
<p>The HTML for each Twitter, Flickr and diary post in the Bangladesh River Journey is written using the <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/hatom">hAtom</a> microformat. This means, for example, that <a title="The Bangladesh River Journey HTML as an RSS feed" href="http://tools.microformatic.com/transcode/rss/hatom/www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/">an RSS feed can be generated directly from the HTML on the page</a>.</p>
<p>If you use the <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/">Firefox</a> browser, you can explore other microformats on the Bangladesh Boat site, with the excellent <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/4106">Operator extension</a>. You&#8217;ll find <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/xfolk">xFolk</a> bookmarks, <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/geo">geo</a> locations, <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/hcalendar">hCalendar</a> events, <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard">hCard</a> contacts, <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/xoxo">xoxo</a> lists and <a rel="tag" href="http://microformats.org/wiki/rel-tag">tagged</a> links:</p>
<p><img src="http://dharmafly.com/images/bangladeshboat_geo.png" alt="BBC World Service Bangladesh River Journey screenshot, showing the Operator extension to Firefox" /></p>
<h3><abbr title="Geo-encoded 'Really Simple Syndication' (RSS) feed">GeoRSS</abbr></h3>
<p>The <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/rss.xml">site&#8217;s RSS feed</a> allows users to stay up-to-date with new posts, without needing to re-visit the site (we talked about using RSS in a <a href="http://dharmafly.com/blog/shazaam">previous post</a>).</p>
<p>The feed is encoded with the geo coordinates of each post (this is called <a href="http://georss.org">GeoRSS</a>). Some interesting things can then be done with the feed, such as <a title="Latest 20 posts from the Bangladesh River Journey, plotted on to Google Maps" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/bangladeshboat/rss.xml&amp;z=8">plotting it straight on to Google Maps</a>:</p>
<p><img src="http://dharmafly.com/images/bangladeshboat_googlemaps.png" alt="BBC World Service Bangladesh River Journey GeoRSS feed plotted on to Google Maps" /></p>
<h3><abbr title="Application programming interface">API</abbr></h3>
<p>Part of the task was to build an <abbr title="Application Programming Interface"><a rel="tag" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Api">API</a></abbr> &#8211; a way for web developers to access the data in the system, to create their own mashup applications. This will be promoted through <a href="http://backstage.bbc.co.uk">BBC Backstage</a> &#8211; the BBC&#8217;s hub for exploring new media technology. More about this soon&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> The <a title="Bangladesh River Journey API documentation" href="http://bangladeshboat.welcomebackstage.com">Bangladesh River Journey API</a> is now live on BBC Backstage. Inspired by Google&#8217;s addition of a <a title="Google's Greasemonkey API to their web email service, GMail" href="http://code.google.com/p/gmail-greasemonkey/wiki/GmailGreasemonkey10API">Greasemonkey API to Gmail</a> (<a href="http://simonwillison.net/2007/Nov/7/gmail/" title="GMail Greasemonkey API reported on Simon Willison's blog">via</a>), we added an experimental <a href="http://bangladeshboat.welcomebackstage.com/#greasemonkey" title="Greasemonkey API on the Bangladesh River Journey site">Greasemonkey API</a> to the Bangladesh River Journey site.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> We added <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyhole_Markup_Language" title="KML"><abbr title="Keyhole Markup Language">KML</abbr></a> as a data format to the API. This allows you, for example, to <a title="KML feed from the BBC Bangladesh River Journey" href="http://bangladeshboat.welcomebackstage.com/feed/?format=kml&#038;numPosts=all">view the entire journey of posts</a> in mapping applications like <a href="http://earth.google.com" title="Google Earth">Google Earth</a>.</p>
<h3 class="subsection">Dharmafly &amp; the BBC</h3>
<p>It has been fantastic working with the BBC crew. Everyone has shown their good-nature and team-spirit&#8230; and nothing but excitement for exploring new forms of media in reporting events that matter to the world.</p>
<p>Our own team was:</p>
